Nderitu Wins in 22:59; BY CLAY SHAW YORK, PA--Julius Nderitu, of Kenya, powered away from Amos Gitagama with a half-mile to go, to win in 22:59, the second fastest time ever at the Bon-Ton/York Newspaper Company 5-Mile Run. Eight of the top eleven spots went to athletes from Kenya. U.S.A. runners took two spots, and Russia the other. The race was held July 29. Keith Dowling, the 1992 champion, finished 5th in 23:35. Dowling said that the cloudy skies and cool temperatures contributed to the fast pace. Dowling also said that the participation of the international runners, especially the Kenyans, helped him run stronger than expected. Steve Spence, at age 39, ran 23:41 to finish 7th, three seconds faster than his winning time in 1985. Spence, looking to be a force on the Masters circuit in 2002, ran faster than John Tuttle's (23:51) U.S.A. record for 8K/5-miles. Kate Fonshell (U.S.A.) was running in second, and Irina Suvorova (Russia) was running 5th at the turnaround, just short of the 3-mile mark. With 200 yards to go, Fonshell passed Lucy Njeri, of Kenya, to take her second straight Bon-Ton/YNC title in 27:40. Njeri was second in 27:43. Suvorova finished strong, taking third in 27:49. Alison Holinka, of Virginia, took 4th in 28:11; she would make the U.S.A. half-marathon team with a top 5 performance in Parkersburg. The Bon-Ton/YNC 5-Mile Run had a very strong field as usual, but rather weak turnout in total numbers compared to other years. Hopefully that will not be a trend, and the numbers will go back up in 2002. The Bon-Ton, and the York Newspaper Company were the title sponsors. Contributions from Big Sky Bread, Culligan, Sheetz, McDonald's, Bel Paese, the York Road Runners, the Springettsbury Police and Fire Police, and all the volunteers were greatly appreciated by all.
