No End in Sight at Winter’s End Race

LEHMAN, PA--The Wyoming Valley Striders held its 27th annual Winter’s End 4½-Mile Footrace on Sunday, March 18, 2007. The start and finish were at the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus. There is always a lot of wishful thinking as this race approaches. Will this race be a sign of the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring? For this year the answer again was no. The temperature was below freezing, there was a cold northwest breeze, and the road was partly snow-covered and slippery. Most everyone wore a sweatsuit with a pullover hat. But we again had one runner, Rich Chase, who ran shirtless with no hat. About five minutes after he finished, I told him to put on a shirt and he said, “When I cool off.”

Chris Wadas, the new cross-country and track & field coach at College Misericordia in Dallas, was the winner this year with a time of 24:29. Second was Jeff McCabe of Exeter in 26:07. Jeff is a senior at Edinboro University. Third was John Martino for the second year in a row. His time was 26:52. John now lives in Dallas. Fourth and top Masters was Tim Tyson of Mountain Top in 27:20. Tim had been away from racing for over nine years. Second Masters was Tony Korch of Nanticoke, exactly two minutes back. After placing eighth last year, Steve Templin of Milton moved up to fifth with a time of 28:08. The overall record is still held by Randy Haas with a time of 22:44.

After placing second the last two years, Nadalie Temperine from Nuangola was the top female. Her time was 33:07. Second went to Traci Dutko-Strungis of Swoyersville with a time of 36:09. Third and top female Masters was Mary Majikes of Wilkes-Barre in 36:26. The fourth female was Laura Wojnar in 37:37. Laura lives in Madison Township. The female record is held by Patty Kupstas in 26:06.

We are still hoping that at race time next year we can say that it is Winter’s End.
