Berdan, Stick Outrun Field of 4000 BY CLAY SHAW BALTIMORE, MD--Baltimores largest race (other than the
Marathon Festival) gets out the green people for a big St. Patricks
Day celebration. The parade followed the 5K, held on March 14. Dave
Berdan, in great shape, scorched the course in 14:29, was 20
seconds up on Jake Klim (14:49), and over half-a-minute on third
place Izzy Mehmedovic (15:07). The top three men broke away
from the over 4000-runner field very early in the race. Sherry
Stick had an even larger margin of victory (40 seconds), as she
won in 18:00. Diane Heiser was second in 18:40, and Courtney
Waldhauser third in 19:04. Of note was 13-year-old Michael
Wegner who placed 9th overall in 16:11. Sarah Mendes of
Goleta, California placed 8th overall in 20:05, wearing green
knee socks. Brittany Lang, age 11, of Columbia, MD placed 9th
female overall in 20:17. A large outdoor party at Market Place caps off this large
and spirited event.
