$14,000 Raised to Help Fight
HERSHEY, PA--Capitalizing on its success at the 1998 Run for 65 Roses, the second annual version of this 5K, held October 16, attracted over 300 participants in both the 5K, the one mile walk, and the kids 1/4 mile Run for the Rosebuds. It was a lovely Autumn day for a race. The course has been redesigned to live up to the descriptions of "flat and fast." It is run almost exclusively on Hershey Entertainment property and finishes on the track at Hershey Stadium. Due to the removal of the hills, the 1999 version saw considerably quicker times. Dave McMillan returned to defend his title and posted a 15:25, almost a minute quicker than 1998. Kevin Geesaman of Waynesboro led McMillan by several strides until the last 600 yards and was only bested by three seconds. The women's race was not quite as tight as Wendy Nelson Barrett shot to the lead at the start and pulled away steadily throughout the run. Barrett, the winner of the $100 bill at the Pumpkin 5K on October 30, was 42 seconds ahead of 31-year-old Laurie Corbin of Boonton, NJ. These two fast women were the only ones to go under 20 minutes. Misti Demko, 1998 victor, showing the signs of her pregnancy, came as a spectator. The awards ceremony featured lots of door prizes, various fruits, drinks, subs, and cookies. Everyone was well fed. Age-division winners were given large Hershey bars inscribed with the race name. A few years ago, a preschooler with Cystic Fibrosis had occasion to overhear his mother making frequent phone calls with reference to his disease. One day he said triumphantly, "I know what you're always talking about, it's my sixty-five roses." Over $14000 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by race director Lisa Stokes and a legion of volunteers who saw to it that all participants left well satisfied.
