RED BANK, NJ--Twenty-six-year-old Kenyan runner Joseah Matui
won the 2004 George Sheehan Classic 5-mile run, held June 19,
with a time of 23:51. Matui, who trains in West Chester, PA,
was followed by second place finisher Paul Mwangi, 37, also from
Kenya, who finished in 24:14. Barry Kain, 22, of East Brunswick
finished third in 25:49.
Last years top female finisher, Ethiopan Atalelech Ketema,
21, won for the second year with a time of 28:03. Maria Busienei,
18, of Kenya finished in 28:45 to place second and Noel Whitall,
26, of Toms River finished third with a time of 29:43.
There were 3,000 athletes that participated in the Sheehan
Classic, a two-day event held June 18-19 that included a kids
race, a two-mile health walk, and the five-mile run.
We moved the race from its usual August date, hoping
that we would have cooler weather, said race director Philip
Hinck. Although the weather was unusually hot and humid
for mid-June, we had a very successful race, thanks to the hard
work of countless volunteers.
The top male finishers from New Jersey were Kain, who finished
third overall; Bill Hoffman, 24, from Eatontown; and Tim Mulligan,
23, of Whiting.
Whitall was the top female finisher from New Jersey, followed
by Alicia Kelly, 42, of Spring Lake and KC Meehan, 23, of Brick.
John Sheehan, 47, and Kathleen Clifton, 41, were the top finishers
from Red Bank. Sheehan is the son of Dr. George Sheehan, the
physician, author, and running guru for whom the event is named.
The top male and female from Fair Haven were Dickson Mercer,
22, and Janet Burpee, 40. Little Silvers top male and female
were Charlie Rooney IV, 15, and Dawn Wilcox, 31.
Complete race results can be found on the Web at www.sheehanclassic.org.
