Adams, Bushey Burn BY CHIP BIXLER NEWARK, DE--The 8th Annual DuPont Pharmaceutical Glasgow Dragon 5K was held under ideal conditions on May 29, 1999 at Glasgow High School. The race is put on as a fund-raiser for the school's Honor Society. The students then decide how to spend the money on educational or charitable pursuits. The race did quite well. In the race itself, there was a duel of two past winners, both former Glasgow cross-country runners, for first place in the male division. Last year's winner Josh Adams ran a 16:34 to repeat winning by four seconds over former winner Nick Fede. Donna Bushey was a 14-second winner in the women's field, running a time of 21:10. Both winners won Gore Activent jackets, courtesy of W.L. Gore and Associates. Other highlights included a tough male 40-49 age group where a time of 18:08 was needed to place. The race director was glad he didn't have to run. Brad Lane continued his streak in the walk, winning all eight years. One of the positive aspects of this race is the involvement of youth, both putting on the race and participating in it. Two teams of elementary students, nearly 20 in all, from Cecil County, MD, challenged each other for bragging rights. For most, it was their first 5K. All received certificates and most wanted to return next year. These are our future runners. Again this year we had a random award of $1 per finisher. Boston Marathoner Dave McKeever of Newark walked, or rather, ran away with $153. We would like to thank DuPont Pharmaceutical for investing in our youth and allowing them to see people from 2-76 years old out having fun. MALE Overall 1. Joshua Adams 16:34 14 and Under 1.
