Cook, Demko Duel in December Dash

HARRISBURG, PA--The 1998 version of the December Dash 5K, held December 5 along the Susquehanna River, saw a repeat of the men's winners from the previous year.

Once again Tim Cook of Chambersburg and Mike Demko of Hershey established an early lead and were the only two finishers under 18 minutes. Cook's time of 17:16 was 21 seconds ahead of Demko. In 1997 both runners were under 17 minutes.

Anne Nash of Bethlehem won the women's division in 19:32, more than 90 seconds on 18-and-under winner Kelly Baker. Nash's time was more than a minute faster than her run at the Marty Sachs race held on the same course in October.

The race attracted 125 runners in chilly conditions. The YMCA put on its usual quality event with a minimum of fuss, plaques in five year age groups, T-shirts, and showers.
