Deuce Event BY CLAY SHAW YORK, PA--Co-directors Karen Mitchell and Ray Ricke had over 250 people, despite rain, at the Double Deuce on New Years Eve--a record turnout. The course is two miles and starts downtown at 11:53 p.m. as part of the First Night New Years Eve celebration. Awards are given to the top three men and women and the top three costumes. A clock is set at the finish but purposely no times are recorded in this for-fun-only event. Last years winners Brandon Bear, 19, of Hellam and Willow Streets Justine Barr, 14, repeated as overall champs. The mens runners-up were Laszlo Orosz, 39, of Ontario, Canada and 19-year-old Jake Schrader of York. Justines sister, Melanie, 14, was the womens runner-up with Kimberly Leathers, 24, of Staten Island, NY taking third. Last years costume winner, Dan VanHouwe, teamed up with wife Lynn--a.k.a. Cleopatra--Joe McMaster, and others to win the costume division. The subjects did a creditable 22-minute run carrying Cleopatra. The toilet and the tub (Addie Becker and Susan Tome) repeated in second place with a new theme, and the friendly Shark theme with sailors, swimmers, hula girl, etc. took third.
