Rain a Relief at Run for Cookies

BERWICK, PA--It's not often that race committees are relieved to wake up to rain and chilly temperatures. But this is exactly what happened for the February 22, 2003 edition of the Berwick Run for the Cookies 10K. Weather predictions of freezing rain and icy roads were fortunately wrong. While the predictions kept some runners home, one hundred and sixty-three hearty souls took to the roads.

Scranton's Matt Byrne pulled away during the hilly third mile to win by over a minute. Faizal Asumda finished second and Chris Wadas third.

Amy Rome, of Dallas, ran with the men; finishing 10th overall. She easily won the women's race with Elizabeth Drazdowski finishing second and Kathy Frick third.

All runners warmed up after the race by enjoying free soup, hot dogs, coffee, and, of course, cookies.

The Berwick Marathon Association would like to thank the Elks Lodge, the Berwick Auxiliary Police, and the many volunteers who helped make this race possible.
