Njuguna and Njoki Win 24th Annual BY CLAY SHAW YORK, PA--Heat and humidity added seconds, and sometimes minutes, to last year's times. Hjuguna and training mates/countrymen Thomas Omwenga and Daniel Kihara broke away from the field early, which included a loose dog owned by Heather Parsons. The trio had distanced themselves from top USA runner Mike Mykytok and Russian Masters star Andrey Kuznetsov, who had a sizable lead over the rest of the field. Njuguna broke free of Kihara at 1½ miles and dropped Omwenga at mile 2. Njuguna cruised to an easy 23:52 victory. On the women's side, Grace Njoki improved dramatically from the 2001 race, in which she finished fifth, with a 40 second victory over Alice Muriithi. Irina Suvorova was third for the second straight year. Newlywed Vicki Cauller was fourth and the first American. Richard Stotlar, of the Flying Feet Racing Team, established his second straight major York race age group record by winning the 60-64 group in 31:28. In November 2001, Stotlar set an age group record at the York White Rose Run. New age groups were added to the race. The 65-69 group was won by Jack Whitcomb in 37:19. The 80-plus group was won by Oscar Fox in 1:00:11, establishing marks to be broken in future years. In this hot summer of drought, an ill-timed, major thunderstorm hit the race venue an hour before the race, obviously changing the minds of would-be race-day registrants. However, the race was held in dry, although somewhat sticky, warm conditions. The course was also certified, which added a few yards. The title sponsors were The Bon-Ton and the York Newspaper Co. Turkey Hill Dairy, Big Sky Bread, Culligan, and Kinard Trucking provided supporting sponsorship. The race was directed by Clay Shaw, Dave Pflaum, and Jan Workinger, with great volunteers. The 25th annual event will take place July 27, 2003.
