Joslyn, Jobes Come from Behind BY MARGARET LIVSEY, BEV BULL, & BILL BULL BERWICK, PA--Weather reports were good for Thanksgiving Day until the day before the race. The reports turned ugly and, unfortunately, were correct right up until race time! But at this point, the steady rain suddenly stopped to everyones delight! There was no sun, but also no wind or rain. It was nice running weather with temperatures in the mid-forties. C. Fred Joslyn of Binghamton, NY followed Steamtown Marathon winner Matt Byrne up The Hill. At this point, about 3½ miles into the race, Joslyn turned on the afterburner. I just wanted to stay close to the leaders until we reached the top of the hill, because Im not really a strong uphill runner, said Joslyn. He proved to be a very strong downhill runner. He ran the all downhill sixth mile in 4:11! This was Joslyns fourth Diamonds run, but his first win. He finished fourth, seventh, and twelfth previously. The female race also featured a come from behind winner. Last years winner, Heidi Wolfsberger, set the pace for most of the race. It wasnt until the seven mile mark that eventual winner Kathleen Jobes of Bethlehem took the lead. Thats when Heidi fell back off the pace. Im excited about my win. Last year, when Heidi won, I finished fourth. I always wanted to win this race. This is my first time winning here in four attempts, said Jobes. Jobes time of 52:40 was the tenth best female time ever run. Wolfsberger finished second with a fine time of 53:01. There were 952 finishers of the race out of the 1,052 entrants. In 2008, just two more years, will be the 100th Anniversary of the first Diamonds run which took place in 1908. In 2009, the 100th running of this race, the Oldest in the Mid-Atlantic Region, will take place. The Berwick Marathon Association would like to thank the many volunteers and sponsors of the race. Without your support, this race could not take place!
