Yount Comes From Behind, BY HERB TOWNSEND SEA ISLE CITY, NJ--Compared to previous years, the weather for the August 12th Sea Isle City Beach Patrol 10-Mile Race was much improved--it was warm, but not hot. Even the ever-present south wind was reduced to a gentle breeze. The race was won by NCAA Track and Fields Athlete of the Year Macharia Yount. Competing in his first 10-miler, the 22-year-old Widener University senior came from behind to finish in 51:17. His time set a new course record and was 19 seconds faster than second place finisher Benjamin Noad of Upper Montclair. Kathleen Jobes, 36, of Bethlehem, PA was the top female in 1:00:45, well ahead of Ocean City triathlete Susan Reich, who finished next in 1:05:10. Most of the 1,207 finishers will tell you this is not a fast course. Roughly 1½ miles is on the asphalt beach promenade, but the rest of it is on the beach where soft sand, potholes, slippery jellyfish, and outfall-pipe obstacles combine to add seconds, if not minutes, to the times.
